Templestowe is one of several suburbs in Melbourne, Australia. Up
until the 1970’s this area of Melbourne had a very small population.
What Templestowe was well known for was its many orchards. One of the
reasons for the low population in Templestowe was because it was
situated directly between two of Melbourne’s rail lines, making it
difficult for residents to get into the city. Another reason was that
the Templestowe area is very hilly. Since that time Templestowe has
become a thriving suburb of Melbourne. Although there is still no rail
service available there is convenient bus service that provides
multiple connections into the city.
During the early years in
Templestowe there was an abundance of orchards providing such crops as
apples, pears, peaches, and lemons. There is still a large green apple
peel that marks the roundabout found on the corner of Fitzsimons Lane
and Porter Road. Over the years the suburb of Templestowe then
expanded out past Balwyn and Kew. The price of land increased
substantially and due to this there was pressure by city officials to
change the boundaries of those lands that were within the restricted
areas not open for sub-dividing.
During the 1980’s Templestowe
became a much more popular place for Melbourne residents to live and a
great deal of development took place. Today, Templestowe is considered
to be one of the more glamorous areas of Melbourne to live, with many
prestigious mansions located throughout the suburb.
