Is Melbourne as dangerous as the media is pretending it to be?

I've been noticing a huge trend in the media lately that Melbourne is a very dangerous place to be especially late on a Saturday night in the Melbourne CBD. I've been going out in Melbourne my whole life. I've been to all the supposed "dangerous strips" such as Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, King Street in the city and around Flinders Street Station and I have to say I don't find it any more dangerous now.

My observation is that these strips are only dangerous if you are acting like a wanker yourself. I've never been in a fight yet I go to all these hotspots. Im getting sick and tired of the media beat up.

I read today in the Herald Sun that our trains are more dangerous the subways in New York or London!

I think there is some degree of sensationalism here, sure we have incidents but as you say most people are directly involved in altercations, drunkeness or worse and the fight is a direct result.

Must say though we need more police out and about. I guess they can't be everywhere.

@donnyresident what? Our trains are more dangerous that subways of NY or London? I find that VERY hard to believe.

It's funny though, without fail, every Sunday night the news are reporting on some poor who has had his head kicked in by some bouncer. It's pretty obvious the problem is alcohol. But I don't know what the police\government can do about it. The 2am lockout was a huge failure.

Perhaps some advertising campaigns like the drink and drive ones showing how a single punch to the head can kill someone? That has always been in the back of my head, how I can hit someone, they fall, hit their head on the concrete and then they die. Jail for you!! Not worth it.
