Port Melbourne

With Melbourne @5 Million Port Melbounre is truly on of the most undervalued suburbs in Melbourne. The light rail is a dream run into town, or a 10 minute bike ride on excellent specific bike lanes. Bay st shops, the beach and a close sense of community mixed with a sense of privacy and heritage surroundings. A piece of Australian history in the most cosmopolitan city. With a new secondary school opening in 2011 excellent primary schools and gorgeous parklands why would you live anywhere else.
A mix of war veterans, greeek immigrants and young families live side by side with singles. Neighbours looking out for each other.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. We live in Beach Street, right on the beach - no road between us - literally on the sand in one of the Mirvac towers. The only sounds we hear are of the seagulls, the putt-putt of boats and the happy chatter of people strolling along the promenade. Great restaurants and more recently we have the welcome addition of Thomas Dux grocers amongst the Bay St shopping strip. A short light rail ride into town and a great atmosphere in Port whether it's day or night. We went to Hawaii last year and declared that Port Melbourne has much more to offer!

One of the most desirable suburbs in Melbourne. It's also has amazing restaurants down by the Spirit of Tasmania docks, as well as along Bay Street. Great in summer, windy in Winter, but well worth the great lifestyle. Great if you can afford it.

Port Melbourne, like many other port areas around Australian capital cities, has undergone a major transformation over the last few years. Once an industrial area, the suburb now offers some really great living options quite close to the CBD.

Many modern apartment blocks have been built, offering dense but efficient living with all the mod-cons. This is a great spot for the professional couple, as the apartments are easy to maintain and close to the CBD. A number of cafes, restaurants and bars have popped up in the area, so lifestyle is good here too. Rental prices are on the high side, and reflect the growing popularity of this suburb.

Port Melbourne has a great feel and is a great beach suburb. Who would have thought there could be such a great beachside suburb so close to central Melbourne?

Port Melbourne has some great restaurants, and there are more than enough pubs, bars, clubs for those that love the nightlife. For those that love a good Sunday brunch there are plenty of cafe's around.

If you don't want to walk or run along the beach there are a few parks there.

A great palce for the young professionals that love the beachside lifstyle but want easy access to the city.

Port Melbourne is one of my fav's because on weekend's I just love going the beach, having a warm cup of coffee with my big brekkie at Zest cafe, and soaking up the amazing atmosphere. I don't currently live in Port Melbourne, but I hope to live there very soon.

One of the best things about Port Melbourne has to be the people. Everyone is so relaxed, so nice and friendly. Everyone on the weekends is just so happy to be there and that's the sort of place I want to live. There is no shortage of cafe's on Bay Street, and the nightlife is just fantastic as well. Great running along the beach, and so close to the city.

The only negatives? A little on the expensive side, but you live right on the beach, so I guess it's completely justified. Looking forward to writing this review as a resident in the next 12 months!

Lived in Port Melbourne for almost 5 years now and I have only great things to say about. I've lived all around Melbourne, Balwyn, Brunswick, Hampton and I have finally found the best place for me.

I love the lifestyle of the beach in Summer and best of all I love the friendly people here. A lot of people think Port Melbourne is a bit snobbish, but I disagree. All the locals here are incredibly friendly, and always have big smiles on their faces.

I wouldn't recommend raising a family here, I think there are better suburbs like Middle Park right next door, but if you are young or perhaps a young couple looking for a nice first apartment, then Port Melbourne would be right up your alley.

The only negatives I would say are the annoying motorcycles that race along Beach Street and Bay Street. But it's a very minor issue.

The three main things that make Port Melbourne one of the best suburbs in all of Melbourne is:

1) Beach - the beach is amazing during the summer months, but I like it even better during the winter months because you can have a nice walk on a Sunday afternoon and then get all warmed up with a nice hot coffee on one the many cafe's on Bay St. Admittedly there are cleaner beaches, but this is right on your doorstep, and it's a beautiful thing to wake up to every morning,

2) The Bars, Pubs and Clubs - I'm a bit younger, so I like to go out and Port Melbourne has everything from The Pier to the Beach Hotel. The Sloaney Poney on Crockford St is a massive favourite of mine as well. Great crowds as well out in Port Melbourne. While you may find a few footballer types (which normally I hate) it's not too bad.

3) The People - are sooooo friendly. There is a wide range of age groups, but generally most are quite social which makes Port Melbourne such a great place. From young singles and starting out families all the way up to retirees, everyone seems like they are on happy juice :) It's a great place to live.

If you are looking for such an energetic place to live, with a view to die for, then go Port Melbourne.

Port Melbourne has everything you could ask for in a place to live...bars, beaches, great restaurants and pubs. Shopping on Bay street is fantastic, Waterfront Place has some great amenities with IGA and a fitness gym (that's annoyingly busy on Monday-Wednesdays however), and Beach Street \ Beaconsfield Parade is one of the nicest strolls in all of Victoria on sunny weekend.

Look out though, as Port Melbourne can be quite expensive...but I guess you get what you pay for. If you are lucky enough, you'll have ocean views. My preference is for Rouse Street, or Johnston Street near Pickles Street...but overall you can't really go wrong anywhere in Port Melbourne.

Port Melbourne also suits all types, from young singles who love to party, to large families, to older people who like to take weekend strolls. It's also so close to city, and public transport is very closeby.

Port Melbourne has it all. Anyone who has even visited Port Melbourne knows that it is one of the most desired places to live in all of Australia...and the reason is because of the fantastic lifestyle it offers.

In summer, the beach comes to life, and the nightclubs really get fired up. The Pier Hotel, Ocean Blue, Campari restaurant...all are fav's of mine. Bay Street has fantastic shops, and a simple walk along Beach Street on a sunny afternoon and you will be sold...this is the lifestyle everyone wants....and only some can afford. It's quite expensive to live here, but i still think you get value for money. You can get access to some affordable apartments, but forget the penthouse apartments, they all go for 1.5 mil plus.

Overall it's an amazing suburb to live in especially if you are young and single. The only downside is the noise at times from the traffic and the howling wind...but these are minor issues. If you can afford it, move to Port Melbourne.
